One damn mistake, they said, could change your life, and mine had turned everything upside down.
The chill in the room made my skin prickle as I groaned and reached for the duvet to cover myself. My hand, however, landed on a warm body. I jolted upright, immediately noticing my clothes scattered on the floor and realizing I was completely naked. I pulled the duvet around me and my eyes fell on a man sleeping peacefully on the bed.
"What the hell?" I whispered, shock and confusion mixing in my voice. "Shit, shit." The moment I muttered the words, my head pounded, and fragments of the previous night flooded back. I remembered following my friends-Emma, Tonia, and Mara to a nightclub for our usual ladies' night. I recalled taking shots and drinking heavily, but I had no memory of ending up in a stranger's bed.
I frantically searched the room for my cell phone, finally finding it under the bed. I unlocked it, only to be met with a barrage of messages and notifications. They all seemed to suggest that I was engaged to Ivan Carlos.
Ivan Carlos. The name was absurd. He was a top celebrity in Canada, a public figure no one had actually seen up close, except those in his inner circle. Why would I be associated with him?
Emma's name appeared on the screen, and I dialed it, my anxiety rising as I waited for her to answer.
"Vera, where are you?" Emma's voice was laced with concern. "Your mom's been calling me, and all I could tell her was that you were with me."
I rubbed my forehead, trying to soothe the throbbing pain. "How should I know? I woke up in a stranger's bed."
There was a pause, and then Emma's voice came back, hesitant. "Vera, I'm so sorry. I still can't believe it either."
"What... what are you talking about?" My voice trembled as I awaited her explanation, but before she could elaborate, someone snatched the phone from my hand. I turned to find myself face-to-face with a shirtless Ivan Carlos.
"Your call is disturbing my early morning sleep," he grumbled, tossing the phone onto the bed and heading towards the bathroom.
I stood there, frozen in disbelief. I had not only slept in Ivan Carlos's bed but was now confronting him directly. As reality set in, the possibility that something had happened between us became more apparent.
I scrambled to gather my clothes from the floor, dressing quickly and grabbing my phone. Without looking back, I hurried out the door.
Outside, I took a deep breath, attempting to calm my nerves as I navigated down a lavishly decorated spiral staircase. The gold and black decor made it look like something straight out of a real estate showcase.
As I reached the bottom of the stairs and neared the exit, a voice stopped me. "Mrs Carlos, where are you going so early in the morning?" A woman in a white and black uniform approached me, and I looked around, expecting to see someone else she might be referring to. But it turned out she was talking to me.

I was about to push open the door to my mom's room when I overheard a conversation. At first, I intended to mind my own business, but when I heard them mention my name, curiosity got the better of me. I decided to see who they were and what they were saying.
"Oh, my dear. I understand you're upset," Mrs. Carlos said as she stood behind the woman I had seen earlier, gently playing with her hair. "But don't worry. Ivan's heart truly belongs to you. Forget the internet; they just want something to gossip about. That girl isn't worth it."
I peered at them through the small gap in the door. The woman had a satisfied smile on her face, one that made me want to wipe it off right then and there.
"Why is she here anyway? I wish we could just kick her out of this mansion," Isabel complained, her voice dripping with frustration.
Mrs. Carlos moved from her position behind Isabel and sat beside her. "Ever since the video was released to the public, Ivan's career has skyrocketed from grass to grace. It's brought millions into our accounts. So, I had to bring that brat here to keep the money flowing as she accompanies Ivan to interviews and events."
Mrs. Carlos brushed a strand of Isabel's hair behind her ear and gave her a sweet smile. "Oh, Isabel, have patience. She's nothing around here. She and her lowlife mother."
Isabel's eyes widened, and she smirked. "She's just a commodity."
"Yes, my dear," Mrs. Carlos agreed, her voice cold and calculating.
The anger within me erupted like a volcano. My immediate plan was to find my mom and leave the Carlos mansion as soon as possible. But as I rounded the corner, someone lifted me off my feet and threw me over their shoulder. The familiar scent told me exactly who it was-no one other than Ivan Carlos.
"What are you doing? Let me go!" I hissed, trying to keep calm, but he didn't stop until he got to his room and placed me on the bed.
"What do you think you're doing?" I demanded as I stood up and headed for the door, but he quickly closed it and blocked my path.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" he said calmly. "I was waiting for you, and you didn't show up."
"That's because I'm not staying in the same room as you," I shot back. "This is just a marriage of pretense, so we can't stay together."
He smirked. "It might be a pretense to you, but to me, it's more." His eyes locked onto mine as he stepped closer.
"I know you planned all this, and I need to know the truth, Ivan," I said, struggling to keep my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me. "Why did you do all this? The video, the proposal, everything... Why me?"
Ivan's expression grew serious as he reached out to take my hand, his touch surprisingly gentle. "Because you're the only one who's ever made me feel alive, Veronica," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "I know it sounds crazy, but when I'm with you, everything makes sense. I didn't plan for it to happen like this, but after that night when I took your virginity, I realized you're all I need."
I searched his eyes for any sign of deception, but all I saw was sincerity. It was as if he was baring his soul to me, and I wasn't sure how to react. I wanted to believe him, to trust that his feelings were real, but the thought of Isabel suddenly crossed my mind-the fact that she claimed to be engaged to him and even showed me the ring. The memory made me roll my eyes.

"Then we shall proceed with the preparations as planned," the woman sitting next to Mrs. Carlos said, her voice calm and composed, as if nothing had just happened. I watched Ivan walk away, leaving me to drown in the weight of it all. Everything was starting to suffocate me, and the worst part was that I couldn't do anything about it.
"What if I don't want any of this?" I asked, dropping my hands to my sides in frustration.
Mrs. Carlos clicked her tongue, rising from her seat with an air of ownership. "Veronica, it doesn't seem like you can back out now," she said, her tone almost mocking. "It's no longer a favor. I've paid the six million dollars your mother and I agreed upon, not to mention the money Ivan gave your friends. You owe us more than what we're asking of you."
The floor seemed to fall out from beneath me, the weight of her words sinking deeper into my chest. Six million dollars? My mother had sold me into this? And my friends... they had taken money too? Betrayal flooded my veins, and I felt like I couldn't breathe.
"Oh, what a shame," Isabel chuckled, her voice dripping with amusement. I glanced at her, seeing the smirk on her face as she exchanged a mocking look with Mrs. Carlos.
I shot them both a confused and furious glare before turning on my heel and storming out of the room. My feet carried me up the stairs to my mother's room, each step fueled by the seething anger bubbling inside of me. I slammed the door open, finding her sitting in front of the mirror as one of the maids tended to her face.
"How could you, Mom?" I cried, my voice shaking with the raw sting of betrayal. "How could you conspire with them like this? Sell me off as if I'm some kind of asset? I didn't ask for any of this!"
My mother's face fell, the serene expression she had worn moments ago replaced by guilt and discomfort. She waved the maid away, who quickly gathered her things and left the room, leaving us alone.
"Veronica, calm down," she said softly, rising to approach me, but I took a step back, not wanting her anywhere near me.
"Calm down?" I repeated incredulously, my voice rising. "You sold me, Mom! Six million dollars? Was it all that I am to you." I was tearing up now.
My mom sighed, taking a hesitant step toward me, but I recoiled, keeping the distance between us. "Veronica, trust me. At first, it wasn't like this. Mrs. Carlos is a cunning woman."
I stared at her, feeling the anger twist deeper in my chest. "You still went through with it, Mom. Cunning or not, you made the deal."
Tears welled in her eyes as she clasped her hands together, her voice breaking. "I thought I was protecting you. We were drowning in debt, Veronica. You didn't know, but we were about to lose everything-our home, our dignity. I didn't know what else to do. Mrs. Carlos made it seem like this marriage would be a way to save us, to give you a life I couldn't."
I shook my head, the betrayal too fresh to process fully. "And you thought this, selling me off for money-was saving me?"
